Moscow has several airports currently in use, though the main facilities continue to be Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo and Vnukovo. Domodedovo is the largest of the three airports, followed by Sheremetyevo and Vnukovo. Vnukovo is the most popular airport for private jet passengers arriving into Moscow. It is 17 miles SW of the city and handles over 10 million passengers a year. During the war it was a military base, though switched to a passenger airport soon after. With runways of around 10,000ft Vnukovo can accept a wide cross section of aircraft including the larger, heavier types. Vnukovo airport is well set up for VIP’s and government officials. The airport has numerous VIP lounges and an increasing number of FBO’s offer high end airport services to visitors arriving into Moscow by private jet. Such vistitors arrive and depart from a dedicted General Aviation terminal. The airport continues to expand and current developments are expected to complete by 2015. Currently Vnukovo is one the busiest airports in the world where private jet aviation is concerned. In the summer months weatlhy Russians head for the Mediterranean and in the winter months to St Maarten for the superyachts, or ski resorts such as Courchevel and Verbier.
