Mason secures the double at Brands Hatch
14th April 2009
Gary Mason proved that he can mix it with the factory backed teams following a blistering performance aboard the Execflyer backed Quay Garage Racing machine at the season opener. From opening practise on Friday through to the final race on Monday, Mason proved his mettle riding the privateer machine to the limit finishing 6th overall in the first race and 9th overall in the second race of the British Super Bike series. He also secured maximum points in the privateer championship finishing over 24 seconds ahead of the next competitor in this class and only 4 tenths of a second off the pace of the fastest lap set by Glen Richards in race 1.
In race 2, Mason again set the fastest lap of the privateer riders, only 0.17 seconds off the fastest lap of the race. Mason lies 6th in the overall British Championship standings.
Team Principal Ian Woollacott commented “We are extremely pleased with the results the team achieved this weekend at Brands. Given that we were running a 2008 spec engine generating 10-15 bhp less than the rest of the grid, having blown our number 1 engine in practise, Gary Mason proved that he has the ability to ride the machine to its limit. We lost time to the works riders on the straights, but Mason maintained excellent corner speed on what is essentially a tight circuit. We now have a lot of work to do in advance of Oulton Park, but will again be aiming for at least a top 10 finish”.
Gary Mason added “ My thanks go out to all the team who have worked tirelessly in the last few weeks to get us on to the grid for the 09 season. We are on a 07 bike and the team have given me a fantastic machine on which to compete. I would also like to take this opportunity to formally welcome our new crew chief, Brad, who again has shown such passion and professionalism, in this, his first race with the team. Thanks are due to all at Execflyer for the faith and the support they have given me and the team. ”
The next round of the British Super Bike series is at Brands Hatch on the 2-4 May.
