Orignally named Nairobi International Airport, the largest airport in Nairobi was renamed Jomo Kenyatta International Airport following the death of the president Jomo Kenyatta in 1978. Two airlines are currently based at Jomo Kenyatta namely Fly 540 and Kenya Airways. The airport currently flies around 6 million passengers a year, though much development is currently underway to renovate existing terminals, and build a new terminal allowing upto 20 million passengers a year to pass through this facility. As Nairobi continues to grow its economy the apetitite for private jets and their associated infrastructure will grow. Africa is one of the fastest growing private jet markets in the world and with Nairobi attracting a growing number of global corporations such as Cisco, Google and Coca Cola, it seems only a matter of time before we see dedicated private jet facilities in this part of the world. The airport authorities are also expected to begin work on a new 18,000ft runway with new ILS allowing seamless operations in the event that an incident should render one runway out of action. Such a long runway willl allow long range aircraft to fly direct from Nairobi to New York and Montreal.
