First introduced in 1993, the Robinson R44 is manufactured by the Robinson Helicopter company. It is a small 4 seat aircraft with two bladed rotor and tail rotor. Several versions of the R44 have been built including the initial Astro, Raven and Raven II. The R44 is powered by a Lycoming IO-540 AE1A5 able to lift a payload of around 408 kgs. Range of the R44 is 300 nautical miles though this reduces significantly with increase load. It has a cruise speed of 110 knots.

Robinson R44’s are entry level helicopters widely used by flying schools and helicopter charter operators for short hops with light loads. They have a cheap cost of operation and this is reflected in the low cost to charter this particular helicopter type. Being a single engine helicopter this aircraft would need to be fitted with floats to operate over water, and is restricted from flying in instrument conditions or at night.
